How Does the Findability of My Business Affect Sales and Growth?

How Does the Findability of My Business Affect Sales and Growth?

If your phone is not ringing as often as you would like, it is easy to assume you need more advertising.

But there is another question worth asking first:

Can enough of the right people actually find your business, understand what you do, and decide that you are a good fit?

Those are different problems.

A business can be hard to find. It can be easy to find but difficult to understand. Or it can attract plenty of inquiries from people who were never good prospects in the first place.

That is why I use the term business findability rather than treating this simply as an SEO problem. Searches happen in a lot of ways now. A business must be findable across the spectrum of Search functionalities.

Findability is the ability of the right potential customer to discover your business, understand why you may be relevant, develop enough trust to investigate further, and know what to do next.

Why Is My Business Not Getting Enough Calls or Leads?

If inquiries are slow, poor findability may be one reason.

You may be missing from important searches. Your business information may be inconsistent. Your website may not use the same language customers use. Or people may find you but not see enough reason to take the next step.

Business owners usually experience the symptom before they understand the cause.

The phone is quiet. Website inquiries are down. A competitor seems to appear everywhere. Someone says, “I didn’t know you did that.”

Or a good prospect tells you they hired someone else because they found that company first.

None of those automatically proves that search visibility is the problem. But together, they are worth investigating.

Are You Attracting the Right People?

Too few leads are only one kind of findability problem. The other is attracting the wrong leads.

A business might receive plenty of calls, but many come from people outside its service area, people looking for the wrong service, people with unrealistic budgets, or people who were never a strong fit.

That creates activity and churn without creating much opportunity.

Visibility is not the same as relevance.

Your website may say you serve “business owners,” but your best clients may actually be established owners with employees, healthy revenue, and a specific growth problem.

A contractor may describe itself broadly while its best projects come from a very specific kind of customer experiencing particular issues.

A consultant may attract people looking for free information when the real target is a company ready to make a significant change.

Your online presence should help the right person think:

“This sounds like it is for me.”

It should also help some poor-fit prospects recognize that it is not. That is not lost business. It is better qualification. It is okay for a reader to gain helpful information AND the understanding that they aren’t a good fit yet.

Where Are Customers Looking Now?

Customers no longer rely on one source of information or one toolset for performing searches.

They may search Google, check Maps, read reviews, visit your website, look at LinkedIn or Facebook, ask an AI assistant, and then go back to Google to verify what they found.

That means you cannot judge your business’s findability by looking at your website alone.

SEO still matters, but so do:

  • Google Business Profile
  • Maps
  • reviews
  • social profiles
  • customer search language
  • answer-oriented content
  • voice search
  • AI-assisted search

The pieces work together, so it means that businesses have to market differently than 3 years ago. Technology is shifting quickly, so what works today may not be as effective six months from now. Findability should be tested regularly.

How Do You Know What Is Helping or Hurting Your Findability?

This is where many business owners get stuck.

They know what the company means when it uses certain terminology. They know which services are most profitable. They know which pages are outdated. They know who the best clients are.

A potential customer does not. Google and AI systems do not either. They can only evaluate what is actually available online.

That is why an automated SEO score does not tell the whole story.

Software can identify useful technical signals. AI can help analyze large amounts of information. But some questions still require business judgment:

  • Who are you really trying to attract?
  • Does your website speak to that person?
  • Do your reviews reinforce that positioning?
  • Does your content answer the questions a qualified buyer would ask?
  • Is your business easy to distinguish from competitors?

Those are not only marketing questions. They are business-development questions.

To test Findability of my networking members and franchise brands in my portfolio, I used AI tools and a series of technical and business questions to create an interactive agent. I discovered that many business and organizations have errors, gaps, and miscommunications that are negatively impacting Findability, including my own. I tested the agents and process I built and confirmed that the three reports can positively impact small business, non-profit organizations, and multi-unit franchise brands.

What Does the KC Business Findability Level 1 Assessment Report Cover?

The KC Business Findability Level 1 Assessment Report is intended to give a business owner a practical baseline without overwhelming them with technical detail.

At a high level, it looks at:

  • Overall Findability – How easy is the business to discover, understand, and trust?
  • Are You Attracting the Right People? – Does your current online presence appear to speak to the kind of customer you actually want?
  • Top Priorities – What deserves attention first instead of trying to fix everything at once?
  • Customer Search Language – What kinds of questions and phrases are customers more likely to use?
  • Content Opportunities – What should you write or post about to improve relevance and findability?
  • Action Priorities – What can you or your staff begin working on now?

The objective is not more information. It is knowing what to do first.

My own church has a generic name. There are probably several churches with the same name in every state. The KC Business Findability Level 1 Assessment report gave the staff a prioritized list of corrections, improvements, and ongoing practices for managing its website and social media presence.

Findability Is Ultimately a Business Question

Business owners do not need traffic for the sake of traffic. They need the right people to find them at the right moment, understand what they offer, trust what they see, and take the next step.

So instead of asking only: “How good is my SEO?”

Ask: “If my best potential customer went looking for a business like mine today, what would they find, and would what they find lead them to me?”

If you cannot answer that confidently, the KC Business Findability Level 1 Assessment Report is designed to help establish the baseline.

You provide a few links and answers. Knabb Consulting evaluates the business across the customer-discovery environment and provides a Level 1 report with findings, priorities, and recommendations in plain business language.

Level 1 identifies non-technical issues that should be corrected and provides practical recommendations for improving website, social media, messaging, and other findability factors. The Level 2 and 3 reports identify factors that technical teams would have to address and manage.

Start by finding out where your company’s findability stands today.

Your KC Business Findability Level 1 Assessment Report will be in plain language and deliberately avoids technical jargon. It includes an overall grade, customer-fit evaluation, prioritized fixes, customer search language, content ideas, and a review of other online locations.

Use this form to answer questions about your business and target clients. Your answers, along with the KC Findability analytic steps, will be used to create a KC Business Findability Level 1 Assessment Report. You or your staff will be able to make those changes without technical expertise, and it will make a difference as long as the practices are maintained properly. Use PROMO20 to save 20% when ordering the report. When you fill out the form and pay the fee, your report will be provided within 24 hours. There are businesses that give free reports. However, they use just your website and a social media account to run a first-pass report. A free SEO report will not be able to incorporate the value of your input or the business and technical analysis built into the KC Business Findability process.
