Why Storytelling Is One of the Most Valuable Business Skills in the AI Era
Have you ever left a networking event with a pocket full of business cards but very few meaningful connections?
Most professionals have.
They met interesting people. They had good conversations. Yet a week later, almost no one remembered one another well enough to make an introduction.
The problem usually isn’t networking. It isn’t your expertise. It often isn’t even your communication skills.
It’s that people struggle to remember information.
They remember stories.
As artificial intelligence rapidly changes the way we communicate, one truth remains remarkably consistent.
People still trust people. They still buy from people. They still refer people. And they still remember stories.
Technology Is Changing. Human Nature Is Not.
Artificial Intelligence has become one of the most powerful business tools available.
It can help us write, research, analyze, organize, plan and automate. Every business owner should be learning how to leverage it wisely.
Yet AI has also made one thing abundantly clear. Information is becoming a commodity.
Human connection is not (and never will be) a commodity.
If AI can instantly explain your products and services, what makes someone choose you instead of another qualified professional?
Often, it comes down to trust. > Trust is built through conversations. > Meaningful conversations often begin with stories.
Stories Help People See Their Future
One of the biggest misconceptions about storytelling is that it is primarily about talking. In reality, storytelling is about helping someone imagine what becomes possible.
Every business serves a different future.
An HVAC contractor doesn’t simply install equipment. They help families stay comfortable through every season while giving business owners confidence that their operations won’t be interrupted.
A financial advisor isn’t simply discussing investments. They are helping clients envision retirement with greater confidence.
A franchise consultant isn’t selling franchises. They are helping people explore whether business ownership aligns with the future they hope to build for themselves and their families.
The product changes. The desired future changes. AND the principle remains the same:
People rarely invest because they fully understand every feature. They invest when they can clearly picture the future those features help create.
Why Stories Matter More Than Ever
Business owners today compete with more information than ever before.
Every day we scroll through thousands of headlines, advertisements, videos, emails, and social posts. Very little of it remains with us.
Stories do something different. They create emotional context. They help us remember. They help us relate.
Perhaps most importantly, Stories help us retell the story of another person in a relatable way.
Stories Travel
One of the greatest compliments someone can give your business isn’t: “I enjoyed your presentation.”
It’s this: “I’ve been telling people about you.”
Great stories don’t stop when the original conversation ends.
They travel.
Great stories become referrals… introductions… recommendations… and opportunities.
The easiest stories to travel aren’t necessarily dramatic. They’re authentic, simple, human.
The best stories are easy to remember. Easy to repeat. Easy to believe.
If your referral partners can confidently retell your story, they’re far more likely to introduce you to the right people.
Networking Is Really About Conversations
Many people think networking is primarily about meeting new people. Meeting people is only the beginning.
The real value comes from learning enough about one another to become trusted resources. Some of the best conversations begin with remarkably simple questions.
- What are you working on?
- What are you trying to accomplish this year?
- Who would make an ideal introduction for you?
- What challenge is keeping you awake at night?
- What makes your business different?
Those questions invite stories. > Stories reveal opportunities. > Opportunities create relationships. > Relationships build stronger businesses.
Leadership Begins with Listening
One lesson I’ve learned through decades in accounting, enterprise technology, project management, higher education, entrepreneurship, and business consulting is that great leaders rarely begin with answers.
They begin with curiosity.
Questions create conversations. > Conversations create understanding. > Understanding creates alignment. > Alignment creates confidence. > Confidence allows people to move forward together.
Whether you’re leading a project team, building a business, growing a referral network, or exploring business ownership, those principles continue to apply. Every business goes through cycles of Create, Grow, and Scale.
Clarity Before Action
Many entrepreneurs naturally want to move quickly. Momentum is important.
So is direction.
One thoughtful conversation can save months of frustration.
That’s why I encourage business owners to seek three things before making major decisions. Gain clarity about your opportunities. Find alignment with your purpose, values, and goals. Confidently take the next right step with the right people.
That is why I set up the monthly Create Grow & Scale Workshop. It is a free way for people to examine their purpose and goals and to ask questions.
Speed matters. Direction matters more.
We Are All Living a Story
Every business, family, leader, and organization has a story.
The question isn’t whether you’re living one. You are!
The better question is this:
- What story are your customers, employees, referral partners, and community telling about you?
- Will it be a story worth repeating?
- Will it travel?
Let’s Start the Conversation
Whether you’re growing your business, exploring business ownership, strengthening your referral network, or simply looking for greater clarity about what’s next, meaningful conversations remain one of the most valuable investments you can make.
This week, I’ll be discussing these ideas with business owners during our Network in Action meeting and our Create • Grow • Scale workshop. (The Next 5 Scheduled Meetings or Follow the Full List on Eventbrite)
If you’re looking for greater clarity, stronger alignment, and confidence to take your next right step, I’d love to hear your story. If meeting in a group environment isn’t right for you, we can schedule and have a private conversation.
Every great business begins with an idea, a dream, and definitely conversations.
Sometimes those conversations lead to a new relationship. Sometimes they lead to a new opportunity or helpful introductions in either direction. Sometimes they lead to a new business. Sometimes they simply change the way we think.
